His nudes were not published during his lifetime. In addition to these black-and-white photographs, which are widely known to the public, there are some 60,000 excellent medium-format color slide positives that Helbig had produced especially for the numerous slide shows with which he made his living. The photographs, some of which were taken in the 1950’s, are seen in the tradition of Wilhelm von Gloeden and Guglielmo Plüschow. Only after his death in Mainz in 1986 were the nude photographs of young men discovered in his estate. Konrad Helbig is mostly known for images of young Sicilian men.
